当代英国社会与文化 课程中文简介
该课程的目的在于培养学生对英国文化与社会的认识，同时发展他们的语言运用能力。选用教材是《当代英国概况（修订版）》，肖惠云主编，上海外语教育出版社出版，2003年8月第一版。教材的内容包括当代英国的概貌、家庭、就业、业余生活、教育、福利、宗教、法律、政治、经济、外交、大众媒介等方面。与同类教材相比，该教材有以下特点：1. 教材的编写大纲是在国家教委的指导下，组织了我国主要外语院系的专家、学者经过大量的调查研究和深入的讨论后制定出来的。 2. 教材覆盖面广，有丰富多样的素材供学生自行揣摩和消化，领会英国文化的内涵。这样，学生既了解了文化，又学到了与此相关的语言。3. 教材编排新颖，配有多样化的练习。在使用原始材料获取信息的基础上，学生进行小组讨论或书面总结，加深对英国社会文化的认识，提高批判思维能力，同时提高语言运用能力。教学将遵循以下原则：1. 教材覆盖面广、内容多，需掌握好了解概况与深入探讨核心问题的平衡。2. 从某个素材着手，鼓励学生从英国历史的纵向角度或中英文化比较的横向角度出发，对文本作出分析，培养创造性思维能力。3. 把握课堂节奏，充分调动学生的主动性，帮助他们在交际语境中加深跨文化意识，同时提高英语能力。

Content: Chapters 1-18Introduction, FamilyPersonal Relationships (1/2), Education, Work, Leisure, Holidays and Tourism, Crimethe Police, Justicethe Law, Beliefs, Welfare, Domestic Economy, System of Government, Political partiesGroups, The Media (1/2), Britainthe World, Foreign TradeObjectives:By the end of the course the students should have acquired enough cultural knowledge to be able to outline the main features of Britain using up-to-date evidence, explain how British society and its institutions work, understand better what it is like to be British and appreciate better the extent of unity and diversity, stability and change in British society. The students should also have a better understanding of the main problems facing Britain and the different sections of British society, so that they will be able to apply this knowledge in their future life.The students are also expected to be able to recognize and use a wider range of vocabulary and idioms connected with British life and to communicate clearly what they have learned about Britain, in both speech and writing.
